CLEARLAWN / UNDERSTAND THE LAYERS

How artificial
turf works.

Artificial turf is more than its green surface. Explore the fibres, loose infill and backing, then see how the aggregate base and ground support the system below.

See the assembled turf, open the cutaway or separate the layers to understand their roles.

THE LAYERS OF RESIDENTIAL TURFAn illustrative system
An attractive residential artificial turf yard seen from above the surface.

A familiar surface.
A whole system below.

Cutaway: a corner is removed to reveal the same layered system. The cut face is an illustration, not a drain.

Water moves through the pile and infill, crosses a permeable backing, and depends on the base and site’s drainage design to move away. The route varies by installation; backing holes alone do not guarantee drainage.

Ongoing care addresses the fibres and upper infill. The model shows one generalized construction. Infill, backing, base materials and site drainage vary. Layers are separated only for explanation; the gaps in the exploded view do not exist in an installed lawn.
